Piasentaargues for an ‘athlete oriented’ instead of ‘performanceoriented’ approach and considers the performanceoriented viewpoint as “dehumanizing” (p. 8). Piasentasupports athletes striving for improved performancesfor internal personal reasons instead of external socialfactors. An approach that is congruent with typical definitionsof intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
