Abstract

Area-based conservation, in particular protected areas, is the primary approach used across the globe to address biodiversity decline, and now covers approximately 8% of the world's oceans and 17% of its lands. As area-based conservation is set to diversify and rapidly extend under the recently adopted 30x30 target to protect 30% of the planet by 2030, we take stock of the approach, including its history in global conservation policy, and performance to date. At this pivotal point, we outline three priority directions for conservation science, policy, and practice to ensure area-based conservation contributes to securing a sustainable and just future.
